Does Online Coaching Really Work?

Does Online Coaching Really Work?

Over the past 2 years, we’ve been experiencing this pandemic that has affected every single one of us in one way or another.

I don’t need to go into too much detail but despite this massive curveball, I was fortunate enough to keep my business going. I was lucky enough to maintain and even build my client roster.

To my amazement, I witnessed my clients continue to maintain a relationship with nutrition and fitness, and some in fact, thrived – despite all the challenges. A giant thank you to the beautiful humans who continued to choose my services and work with me during this time.

I don’t take this privilege lightly as I witnessed many of my peers struggle and some were sadly forced to leave the industry for good.

And while these past few years have been extremely demanding, I believe they collectively taught us one very important lesson – to value our health above all else.

Now is a perfect time to invest in your fitness and nutrition goals, and if you’re wondering how, I’m here to tell you that online coaching is just as effective, if not more – for you and many other individuals.

In the previous post I shared how to pick a coach. If you missed it, you can read it here.

If you’re new here, allow me to briefly share my approach to coaching as a Nutrition and Fitness Coach.

I take a holistic approach, especially when it comes to sports and athletics, and I support looking at all aspects of an individual: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, because we are #Human1Athlete2™ (human first, athlete second)

In the past, I used to adhere to a session by session structure but I learned pretty quickly that what happens between those sessions is in fact more important than the 1-2 hours in the gym itself. This is where online coaching comes in.

Here are the steps to start working together

Step 1 – Get in touch

I can’t help you if we’re not connected. Message me on instagram, facebook, then apply to work with me through my website.  https://parastoobadie.com/work-with-me

Step 2 – Fill out an intake form

Fill out my intake form to the best of your knowledge and comfort level.

Here are some of the questions I cover:

  • What are your outcome goals?
  • What do they mean to you?
  • What has prevented you from achieving them already?

There are several sections including medical history, dietary habits, lifestyle, fitness and movement experience, sport, injury history, contact information for relevant health practitioners (such as physio, athletic therapy etc), and an assessment to determine what accountability and support looks like for you.

Step 3 – We’re connected

We will chat via video call to get to know each other a bit better. At this point, we’ll review the answers from the intake form, and bring our focus to what habits or actions need our attention at this time.

Fitness includes many variables that may be fundamentally similar for everyone, but are still not linear and require individual tweaks to make them sustainable and achievable.

The next few steps are not in a specific order as they really depend on the individual.

Together we continue to explore the following:

  • What phase of sport are we at?
  • Are there existing injuries?
  • What’s your experience with nutrition and fitness?

In terms of nutrition I take into account the following:

  • Health history
  • Preferences
  • Culture
  • Relationship with food
  • Activity level
  • Prepping and cooking skills
  • Access to ingredients
  • Budget
  • Sport
  • Goals and more

What’s important for you to know is that we start where you are and explore these questions (and more) together through conversations (virtual appointments and various tracking tools depending on the person).

Why do I do it this way?

Because some clients are educated on the basics and need accountability to implement what they already know.

Some clients are working towards a specific competition with existing habits, and need caloric and macronutrient targets.

And some clients are overwhelmed and need support navigating the elements of nutrition and eating sustainably for mind and body.

In terms of fitness, I already learned about your exercise and injury history in the intake. In our next virtual meeting, I will take a look at how you move.

Every personal trainer has a different style and analysis processes.

My style has evolved over the years where I put less emphasis on teaching, going through a set checklist, and pushing with intensity; and more focus on observing, noticing, and checking in with your feelings and feedback.

I keep it low-key before loading your body with additional resistances or weights in the future.

Benchmarks relevant to your sport are important when it comes to athletic testing but we may or may not be there yet and that entirely depends on the person in front of me.

We will continually assess, reassess, and refine your plan with adequate progression relevant to you and your goals.

I want to be transparent here to help you manage your expectations: online training isn’t for everybody.

Since we don’t have the live hands-on component, you will have to put in a bit more effort to keep up with check-ins, send exercise videos to check form, and increase communication with me, your coach.

I address this through referring clients to practitioners I trust, such as physiotherapists and athletic therapists, to review aspects I can’t physically assess or share online.

Because of these various tools I employ, and past successes, I believe online training does work wonderfully for many people.

And while I love connecting in person, online has offered so many opportunities that go beyond the 4-little walls of my community gym.

I’ve worked with coaches in Australia and clients in Dubai.

My goal is to solidify the fundamentals and to help you perform better, recover faster, and feel greater, so you can “Become Badass” for life, wherever you are in this world.
